Weather & winter burials

Cemeteries in New York State are required to perform burials on a six-day basis throughout the year. We are exempt however from performing burials in the event of “severe weather conditions” or other similar conditions. In mild winter weather when the ground is not frozen we will accommodate a family’s wishes for burial. In the event of severe weather with a deep frost in the ground or the snow is extremely deep, the cemetery will not be able to make a burial until the weather permits. The weather will determine whether a burial can be done.

Sundays & holidays

Effective February 12, 2007 S.3305. Interments on Sundays and Holidays will be governed by the Cemetery Board Directives 201.8 and 201.12.

Lot ownership, burial rights & payment

Lot owners are prohibited from allowing interments to be made on their lots for compensation. Interments in a lot are restricted to those entitled to burial therein according to the terms of Section 1512 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. Permission for burial of those not entitled to burial according to the said section, must be filed with Champion Hillside Cemetery Association by the lot owner(s).

Except as provided for in section 1513(c) of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, no lot owner may transfer his or her lot outside of the family.

The full purchase price must be received before a deed is issued or a burial is allowed on the lot.

Vaults, grave liners & cremated remains

Bodies remaining in the vault

All bodies left in the vault after May 1st will be removed and interred. If not entitled to burial in a family lot, they will be interred in a single grave. The expense of such interment shall be borne by those who caused the body to be placed in the vault. Only such notice shall be given in this case as shall be practical under the circumstances.

Vault & grave liner requirements

Concrete vaults or concrete grave liners will be required for all interments purchased on or after May 23, 2007 for all graves in accordance with the provisions of the Cemetery Board Directive 201.6. If religious reasons prohibit a vault being used an added cost at burial of $200 will be added to cover the refilling the grave and must be approved by the Cemetery Board.

The interment of cremated remains will be permitted only in appropriate rigid receptacles such as wood, metal, plastic or concrete.
